Biography
Dr. Dougherty, an orthopedic traumatologist, specializes in the care and management of complex traumatic injuries. His areas of expertise include care of new fractures, old fractures that did not heal (nonunions), old fractures that healed incorrectly (malunions), fracture-related infections, orthopedic implant/hardware complications, limb salvage, limb lengthening and amputation. He enjoys treating patients of all ages, having extensive experience caring for pediatric and geriatric fractures.
He has been the head orthopedic trauma surgeon at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute (Hinsdale Division) since 2015, and director of orthopedic trauma at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, DuPage County's only Level I trauma center, since 2017. After personal injuries introduced him to the fields of athletic training and orthopedic surgery while in elementary and high school, he cared for injured college and professional athletes while an undergraduate student at The Colorado College. Next, he completed his medical training at West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he was elected president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Thereafter, he developed his passion for fracture care during his orthopedic residency at Loyola University, Illinois' only ACS-certified Level I trauma center. Finally, he honed his abilities as the orthopedic trauma fellow at MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Previously, he took pride in returning his athletes to their previous level of play. Now, he focuses on returning his patients to their previous levels of activity, on restoring their sense of self and independence, and on helping them overcome the obstacles that impede their recovery. Dr. Dougherty is a member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association, AO Trauma North America, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and additionally enjoys educating tomorrow's orthopedic surgeons to care for traumatically injured patients through education and mentorship.
I’m interested in preparing tomorrow’s orthopedic surgeons to care for patients through education and mentorship."
