Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency

Program Mission

To develop graduates who will advance IBJI’s orthopedic physical therapy practice, with emphasis on clinical reasoning and teaching skills, patient care and advocacy, as well as leadership in our profession. Our program’s faculty, mentors and residents will excel in our clinical practice environment and collaboration with our physicians, leading to innovations for optimal patient outcomes.

We are currently awaiting our accreditation and will update once we receive notice that we are a fully accredited program.

Program Cost

IBJI's residency will reimburse for the costs of the OCS exam, when passed. IBJI's residency program is fully funded by IBJI.

Overview of Curriculum

Illinois Bone & Joint Institute's orthopedic residency program is a 13-month residency, using the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy's "Current Concepts of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy" as our source text. Our residents will work full-time, carrying a 32-hour/week clinical caseload with eight hours a week of didactic learning and clinical mentorship. Examinations include three live patient exams and two written exams as well as skills checks throughout the program.

Residency Outcomes

Our first cohort will be completed in November 2024 and the graduates will sit for the OCS exam in March 2025. Outcomes will be updated in a timely manner.

How many residents are in the program?

Our 2024-2025 cohort has three residents.

When does the residency start?

All cohorts begin in October and run for 13 months through November (end prior to Thanksgiving) the following year.

Where will I be providing clinical care during the residency program?

Residents will be matched with a mentor, if possible, within their home clinic. If this is not possible, the resident's mentorship will occur at a clinic close to their home clinic, while also providing patient care at their home clinic.

How much does the residency cost?

IBJI's residency is at no cost and fees are reimbursed upon passing the OCS exam. The residents will sign a contract to repay IBJI if they leave prior to the end of the contract.

What does the residency schedule look like?

Residents will have eight hours of blocked time for mentorship and didactic experiences per week. These hours include 1:1 mentorship time, weekly virtual presentations, blocked study time and case presentations. Hands-on lab time will also be included throughout the program. The other 32 hours/week will be traditional patient care.

During the residency, will my pay be reduced?

No, residents will maintain their full salary during the residency, as well as maintain their current benefits through IBJI.
